Amidst the dense greenery of the Peruvian jungle, where distances are measured in hours of walking and there are no books except those carried by the wind, an initiative was born that transforms lives today. The NGO Noqankani, true to its motto «Generating Human Development through Health,» began its work serving remote communities, providing medical care to those who had been forgotten by the system for years.
But in each consultation, there was a greater idea beating in the heart of the team: what if, along with health, we also sowed knowledge?
Thus was born «Jungle Library,» a community library built not with bricks and mortar, but with solidarity, culture, and drive. Because in Noqankani, every patient receiving medical care could bring a book as a way of showing gratitude. A donated book, a step toward development.
At first, there were just a few: a dictionary, a textbook, a Bible, an old novel. But book by book, hope by hope, the shelves began to fill. The community, seeing the growth, joined the dream. Young people who previously couldn’t read, today immerse themselves in literary worlds that transport them far away, even if only for a moment.
The library was named after the spirit that founded it: «Tanqa,» which in Quechua means «drive.» Because it was the drive of the residents, the drive of the volunteers, and the drive of love for one’s neighbor that made this space possible.
Today, Tanqa – Jungle Library is more than a library. It is a symbol of resilience. It is the echo of a community that understood that true development is not only measured in medicines or diagnoses, but also in ideas, in reading, in freedom.
And as Noqankani rightly says: «Generating human development through health,» but also through books, culture, and collective drive.
